Good Morning - 'Real I'm Told' + 'One Night'

Good Morning release 2 singles for the price of one, 'Real I'm Told' and 'One Night'.

Good Morning are an Aussie duo made up of close friends Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons. Since their debut in 2014, they've been shouted out by Tyler, The Creator; sampled by A$AP Rocky and have amassed hundreds of millions of streams. It's easy to hear why... their discography bursts with the kind of mellow, Wilco-esque folk/rock that makes you want to quit your day job and spend your days living like beach litter.

'Real I'm Told' bursts into life after the first minute, as the dead, 70s-style drums and characterful vocals are swamped by a back-drop of delicately picked guitars and synths. Although the arrangement skips around a sunny sound-world, lyrically it's a different story - one of growth and uncertainty.

According to Stefan, 'Real I'm Told' was written in 2020. "I was living in a small town outside of Melbourne... I was drinking quite a lot and making some poor decisions that were definitely affecting the people around me". This sentiment is apparent as Stefan sings "Scratched up cars in rural bars, may I take one of those to go? Perhaps I am just cold / but if it stops us getting old, all jokes aside, I found my home".

Simple lyrical potency (along with painfully catchy melodic writing) has become the 'Good Morning' calling card. They haven't changed the formula for this charming 2-minute number.
'One Night' is a different beast all together. The chorus is wordless, as we lazily drift into a swamp of cavernous drums and arpeggiated synths. The following instrumental section leaves the track meandering a little. "Lyrically I'm not sure what it's about yet" says Liam, "but I'm pretty sure it comes from dreams". 'One Night' certainly has a dream-like atmosphere but, at times, it doesn't feel fully realised... maybe that's the point. I mean, who ever fully remembers their dreams.

What can we expect in the future, then, from Good Morning? With these two disparate tracks, it's anyone's guess. One thing is for sure, though: whatever they do next will be done in style.
