Band Of The Week #258 - Mall Girl

This week’s Band of the Week is Oslo trio Mall Girl - who have just released their highly anticipated second album ‘Pure Love’ via Jansen Records.

Pushing hard on the boundaries of pop music - the album offers a unique journey into human emotions and how we experience them. An eclectic merging of influences ranging from indie-pop, dream-pop and jazz to midwest emo and math-rock, 'Pure Love' thematically zeros in on just that, pure love. Through first breakups and dating through post-break-up pain and insecurities, the album finds the band proposing questions: “what do I believe in? Who do I want to become? and Where is my life headed?”.

The band took a moment to talk to us about how the album came together.

Hey there Mall Girl - how are you? So your album is out now - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
We are muy bien and very happy to finally put it out! Hope people show it some (pure) love! We have known these songs for like two years, so I'm kinda looking forward to making some new acquaintances as well.

It is called ‘Pure Love' - what is the meaning behind that?
Pure Love is also the name of one of the songs on the album and we felt like the title summed up the vibe of the songs in a nice way. Pure Love is what it says, no bullshit just real love.

Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
It was recorded at Studio Paradiso with Hans Kristian Nordin behind the gear, and mixed/produced with Marius Elfstedt, just like our last record.

What are the key themes and influences on the album?
I guess it's love in different forms and stages. One song is dedicated to my sister, one is about glueing yourself to the person you love, one is about driving on the beach and some of the others explore what it's like trying to date and fall in love after you've been broken up with and how so many people struggle to just dive right in and commit when something cool is right in front of them.

If the album could be the soundtrack to any film - which one would it be and why?
The Twilight Saga, cuz these tunes need some glittery boys<33

Do you have a favorite lyric on the album - if so, which one and why?
It's hard to choose one line!!

"Can’t you see dear
How I’ve grown
At least two feet dear
It’s pure love"
(From Pure Love)

"I was wondering what path led me to you
I didn’t choose it
Like all the things I do
You’re my potion
My energy light
You give me strength to win in any fight"
(From Glu Myself 2 U)

Now the album is out there - what next?
We’re going on tour, and will probably make some more tunes as well! And apart from that, I wanna have a jolly old time with my PS5<3
