Newmoon - ‘Crazing’

Shoegaze outfit Newmoon return with ‘Crazing’ – the third offering from their upcoming album Temporary Light, out March 22nd.

‘Crazing’ starts with an energy not seen in the other offerings from Temporary Light. A clash of lively percussion kickstarts the track, before Newmoon’s signature crushing guitars take over the propulsion of the instrumental.

In the body of the track, the surface level of sound is predominately strumming guitars. If you listen closely, though, you’ll hear the drawn out synths and the fuzz of guitar riffs that build the impressive wall of sound. Singer-guitarist Bert Cannaerts’ vocals seem to sit just under the instrumental, giving a sense of total immersion in the mellow cacophony.

The lyrics are relatively short, spanning just three verses, but Cannaerts’ drawn out style shows that sometimes less is more. The dreamscape the band creates with their music is matched in the equally hazy, textured accompanying video. Alternating between shots of a bouquet of flowers and kaleidoscopic layered shots of the band performing, the result is a technicolour riot of imagery. Their clever use of lighting passing over the leaves and petals of the bouquet makes the flowers look as if they are alive; an acid trip of creeping shadows and saturated colours.

Speaking on the track singer-guitarist Bert Cannaerts explained: “Crazing is one of the noisier songs on this album.  “We're always looking for that one melody that hides within a song. With ‘Crazing’ we wanted to try our hand at a song that incorporates loads of guitar textures but still feels melodic and airy. On one hand it has these dark and droning fuzzed out guitars but on the other hand it sounds fresh and uplifting.”

The band have released two other songs from the upcoming album: ‘Eternal Fall’ and ‘Fading Phase’. Across both releases Newmoon stick to their shoegaze sonic identity, but the tracks hold their own. ‘Fading Phase’ is well worth a listen; balancing the depths of the instrumental with light chiming melodies and lulling vocals.

Newmoon’s upcoming album Temporary Light is out March 22nd. For readers near Brussels, tickets are available to the album launch party on March 29th.
