Lucy McWilliams - 'Follow Me'

Profound pop sensation Lucy McWilliams releases her latest single ‘Follow Me’, which is an elegant articulation of love that drifts through worlds of intimacy like a warm summer breeze.

McWilliams comments on her latest venture, stating “Follow Me at its core is just a straightforward love song.” We can see this to be true not only in the lyrical storytelling, but the fundamental patterns of the music itself. McWilliams' voice grows in confidence as the instrumental layers accumulate, leaving the song as less of an archetypical verse-chorus piece, and more of a linear narrative. It hypnotically carries you into the sphere of this tender, silky love sonnet, as if being mystified into a lucid daydream. She goes on to say that “It’s about being excited about someone, and feeling all the possibilities of the world in that person.” In this, it emulates the startlingly sweet assurance of Mazzy Star’s ‘Fade Into You’, where you are enticed into the scope of the focal couple, and no cloud of reality can taint this perfect, rose-tinted portrait. It lets you believe that love is more tangible and reachable than ever before.

The dreamy delicacy of the vocals is a combination and apparent reconstruction of Lana Del Ray, demonstrated in McWilliams’ polished and pampered singing voice, and elements of Jorja Smith are subtly incorporated in moments of fleeting intensity. I can only describe the song as a musical representation and melancholic enunciation of La La Land, with its mystical hysteria and hallucinogenic softness, reflected in the natural ease of the lyrics: “If I leave would you come with me, will you take my hand like it’s meant to be.”

Irish pop artist Lucy McWilliams has persisted with her no-barriers 2023 momentum, previously releasing critically acclaimed singles ‘Slow Dancing’ and ‘Plastic’. She hopes to power through 2024 with the same soaring spirit and creativity.
