Corella - 'Head Underwater'

The Manchester outfit continue to set the foundations on the pathway to long term success.

Corella are releasing a new single entitled ‘Head Underwater’ on the 8th March that features on their upcoming debut LP ‘Once Upon A Weekend’ set for release on May 3rd. Though a lot of people will be experiencing this indie rock group for the first time, this band have actually been grafting for a number of years, releasing their first single ‘Waterfall’ in 2016, and slowly building a fanbase that feels personal, and loyal to the band's rise. It’s this experience, and dedication to their craft that rubs off on new single ‘Head Underwater’.

Corella in recent times have adapted blending summer-jangling guitar riffs with danceable rhythmic drum sections. But this song demonstrates a different side to the group with distorted guitars and heavy drums to throw you straight into the deep end, this is a track that’s sure to be popular within future live sets. The song title also presents itself as a repetitive earworm at the heart of a well written chorus that demonstrates the band's growing songwriting experience.

The band's influences are apparent within most of their material so far. However, Corella are finding that sweet spot of blending a classic sounding identity that fans will have an appreciation for with new ideas that contain their own original creativity and keep these new songs fresh. It’s a difficult skill to master when venturing into such a genre in which new artists can sometimes mimic others of a similar vein. This song also shows its maturity with the range of dynamics that are being used. A heavy intro to grab the listeners attention following a notable reduction of instrumentation in the verses, with the elements building back up and all coming together when revisiting the chorus. It’s a trick which artistic legends would use frequently, such as Nirvana and The Beatles.

It’s singles like this that are quietly cementing Corella as a very new and exciting prospect. The band will embark on a tour in May to coincide with the release of their debut album, with some dates already sold out. Corella also have a huge slot at Reading And Leeds Festival this year where they will open the main stage of Reading on Sunday the 25th August, and Leeds on Friday the 23rd. This single may not be lighting up the charts, but setting the pace which suits Corella, and the future of this band just fine.
