The Artist Explains: She Makes War - 'Drown Me Out' (Video)

Who:  She Makes War is the project of Bristol-based multi-instrumentalist,  Laura Kidd

About The Track:  'Drown Me Out' is the first track to be taken from She Makes War's third album, 'Direction Of Travel' - out on April 8th 2016 (online) and April 29th 2016 (physical) via The state51 Conspiracy .

Influenced by 90s alt rock and with  gothic undertones, 'Drown Me Out' is a gloomy yet melodic, combination of swelling percussion and swaying rhythms. What is immediately worth noting is Kidd's mesmerising, silken vocals and her clever ability to spin emotionally engaging and visually stimulating stories. Her words penetrate with a gentle touch, but also hold a grungy sadness and a reproachful danger that could sweetly suffocate its listener into submission.

She Makes War Explains:
"Drown Me Out” was shot in three locations around Bristol - The Old Bookshop, a gorgeous bar and eatery on North Street, Bedminster, Harbourside Walk near the boatyard and The Northern Slopes in Knowle.

The song uses a lot of dramatic nautical imagery to tell a story about a suffocating relationship, so I wanted to show that in the video. It’s all about distress signals - you see me folding origami boats from pages of song lyrics which I send out to sea via the River Avon in the hope that someone will come and help me, and up on the Northern Slopes I use smoke bombs and marine flares to alert the authorities to my plight. Don’t worry - I got clearance from the emergency services to do that in the video, there was no danger of us wasting their time with an unnecessary callout!

I had three marine flares to use for the dusk scene and with the light fading we had very little time to mess things up. The flame from the first flare got blown onto my hand by a big gust of wind - thankfully I was wearing thick gloves for safety and didn’t notice til after the flare had gone out (they last about 80 seconds) that one of the glove’s fingers had melted away from the flame. If I hadn’t been wearing it I’d have suffered serious burns. Stay safe, kids!" - She Makes War.
