The Band Explains: Amatr Art - 'Soft Skin' (Video)

Who: Based in Glasgow, Amatr Art  are an indie/electro five-piece. They are; Jonathan Mullen (vocals & guitar), Josh McGeechan (guitar) and Niall Jootun (bass), Niall Morris (samples/synths) and Lewis Orr (drums).

Abut The Track: 'Soft Skin' sits alongside 'Mirror' on AmatrArt's double a-side single 'Mirror/Soft Skin' which was released on 8th April 2016 via Bloc+ Music.
Both 'Soft Skin' and 'Mirror' combine  avant-garde electronica and indie rock instrumentation to deliver a futuristic and tribal experience. Mullen's unique vocal range adds a sense of pensive mystique and unease to an accessible, ambient, sound that has you caught in its glare like a dear in headlights.

 Who produced the video? Where was it filmed?
The video was filmed and edited by Beth Chalmers (bethchalmers.com). The performance shots were shot in Stereo in Glasgow and the landscape shots are of Craignish. The fish are Beth’s fish.

How does the video compliment the song (if at all)?
The video is quite dreamy, but quite haunting at the same time. You could describe the song like that.

Any behind the scenes stories?
Not really, the video was shot pretty quickly so it was more a case of trying to just fire through everything as productively as possible. We learned that Joot (Niall Jootun, Bass) can climb really well armed with nothing but a belt though, and that he’s not afraid of heights at all.

Tell us about the ideas/ themes/ imagery used?
It was to feel awkward and uncomfortable. Really close and claustrophobic feeling, like you don’t have enough personal space, but also wild, open and beautiful at the same time. Abstract, quick and awkward was essentially the brief.

What is the message the video is trying to convey?
There’s no particular message, it’s more about conveying the themes and ideas that we mentioned before.
