The Artist Explains: Art Block - 'Borderline' (Video)

We speak to East London Singer-Songwriter Art Block about his beautiful alt folk single and video ,'Borderline', the title track taken from his most recent EP, produced by by Ben Walker of Folkroom Records and available on Bandcamp, iTunes and Spotify.

Where was the video filmed?

 Brighton, England

How does the video compliment the song (if at all)? 

The location, by the sea, is intentional given the lyrics in the chorus about the 'Borderline in the sea'. I wanted somewhere beautiful to match the music and song produced by the very talented, Ben Walker. The piling up of stones on the beach is meant to symbolise a border too - those we create ourselves that aren't necessarily something good.

Any behind the scenes stories?

 I met Ada Cotton the director, via someone I spoke to for five minutes at an open mic in London. And she met the person who introduced me to her when she answered an advert for someone looking for a new piece of furniture! Regarding the actual filming - I remember it being very cold and windy - we filmed from 10am to 6pm to get enough material for the 3 and a half minute video!

Tell us about the ideas/ themes/ imagery used and the message the video is trying to convey?

The imagery is very simple - the sea, pebbles and stones on the beach and a songwriter singing with his guitar. The idea behind 'Borderline' is subject to interpretation - either a relationship on the borderline or refugees entering Europe drowning in the sea.
