Where was the video filmed?
The video was filmed in a little local school hall. We really just needed somewhere with a black backdrop and decent lighting, so it proved convenient!
How does the video compliment the song?
Sonically, the song starts out quite down, with layer upon layer being added until it builds to a crescendo. I think the video reflects this in terms of it increasing in emotion and intensity until it reaches its climactic finale.
Any behind the scenes stories?
As the video is just one continuous shot, it took us about twelve takes (with showers between each take) and six litres of honey to get it perfect. To get it the right amount of honey flowing in the right spots at the right time (as well as Jake having to get all the lyrics correct with honey pouring into his mouth!) was pretty tough, but we got there in the end!
Tell us about the ideas/ themes/ imagery used?
The song speaks of someone denying the inevitable end of a relationship. They can't – or won't – let go, despite knowing that it's not good for them...I guess one could say they are trapped in a way. We tried to echo that sentiment in the video... Starting with just Jake singing the song, we poured honey over him until at the end it was literally cascading down his face. He was trapped by the honey, but refused to acknowledge it.
Also, in a happy coincidence, the song is called 'Fools And Their Gold' and honey is somewhat golden...although the video ended up being in black and white, so I guess it wasn't really golden at all in the end...
What is the message the video is trying to convey?
That being doused in a whole lot of honey is not much fun!
