The Director Explains: CRi - 'Why I Love You' ft. Ouri & Odile Myrtil (Video)

Canadian electronic music producer CRi unveils 'Why I Love You' featuring vocals from CRi’s live bandmates Ouri & Odile M.the second single taken from his recent EP 'Tell Her' out on TOKiMONSTA’s Young Art Records. 
We speak to director Romain F. Dubois to find out more about the  track's accompanying visuals shot in Cuba.

Where was the video filmed?

The video was shot at Havana.

How does the video compliment the song? 

There is a moment in the song where the beat drops. At this moment you can hear a kind of latin beat and it makes you feel like dancing but it suddenly stops. After that, you always want to hear this part again and when it finally comes back, you feel good and happy. I wanted to recreate this kind of euphoric feeling you get when you hear your favorite part of a song.

Any behind the scenes stories?

On our first night in Cuba, we went to a bar to have a drink. There was this annoying stand up comedian doing his show and at some point he asked us to come in the front because, well, we were the only three white dudes. He told us to repeat after him: «Yo-Soy-Maricón». Which means: I am a faggot... They all laughed... we stayed a while after that but we were uncomfortable.

Tell us about the ideas/ themes/ imagery used?

It all started with the character. He just popped in my head, standing on the tip of a cliff. He was bald and he wore little sunglasses and big red pants. I began to draw him everywhere, dancing around. I talked with Ménad, the DOP, and we imagined his environment and how we were going to shoot him. Then I met Mickael, the actor, and he was very inspiring. He asked me a lot of questions about the character and his backstory and so we started to build him together. It was so much fun. He is a true artist. Everything in the video is about the character and the result comes from a dialogue between Mickael, Ménad and me.

What is the message the video is trying to convey?
There is no particular message. I hope everyone has their own interpretation but it's essentially about solitude and the bright side of being alone and lost.
