The Band Explains: The Northcoast - 'With You' (Video)

Synthpop group The Northcoast have a chat to us about the ideas behind their sparkly single 'With You', produced by Tom Lord-Alge  and the quirky accompanying visuals.
The video features band members Charlie Grey and a Danny imposter going about their daily business with paper bags on their heads!

The Northcoast Explains:
Where was 'With You' filmed?
The video was shot between Jersey City and Manhattan in various locations, including Charlie's apartment in the beginning of the video.

How does the video compliment the song?
Charlie: The subject of this song originally was about a toxic relationship I was in a few years back. But eventually it turned into somewhat of a bromance story between Danny and I. We weren't really the nicest to each other in the 10+ years we've actually known each other, but we still respected one another's music. After so long and hashing things out, we started making music together again. The lyrics of this song resurfaced and we then found ourselves trying to find a meaning to it, and we did.

Any behind the scenes stories?
The Northcoast: Yeah! The video features an actor by the name of Zack Segel wearing a paper bag with Danny's face. Danny lives in Seattle and Charlie lives in New Jersey so devising an idea for the music video was tricky. Danny couldn't make it to the shoot because of other obligations, however, the idea of it being a different person acting as if they were him seemed to be a funny, tongue and cheek way to let people know, he's the actual band member.

Tell us about the ideas/ themes/ imagery used?
The Northcoast: Originally the idea for the video was about Charlie going on the same date with multiple girls and at the end he was going to get caught. But that didn't really stick since the subject matter of the track wasn't about that at all. The paper bags were a last minute choice and the video was shot all in one day so we had no idea if it was even going to work. The main idea behind the video was basically a "day in the life" scenario whereby we go to the city and get into shenanigans; adding a twist at the end where the person that was with you the whole time, wasn't the person you thought it was. But that didn't mean that we didn't have fun and enjoyed it all the while it happened!

What is the message the video is trying to convey?
The Northcoast: Basically what were all about. Friendship, fun, enjoyment, surprises, silliness. Etc.
We guess you could say we wanted the video to have a cinematic feel. Where you can relate to the characters and how they're mean or playful to each other; have fun and at the end of the day grab a pizza and call a truce.
