The Band Explains: Freeze the Atlantic - 'Altogether Not Together' (Video)

Freeze the Atlantic's tour starts today, and we recent had a chat with them about their recent music video which highlights the plight of refugees in 'Altogether Not Together' .

How was the video for 'Altogether Not Together' filmed?
The video was animated by our good friend Kyle Webster of Chog Zoo Animation Studio. He’s a super talented animation artist who worked previously on videos for Oceansize frontman and Biffy Clyro touring guitarist Mike Vennart’s solo project. How does the video compliment the song? The video concept came to me not too long after writing the song so I guess the two came as one package. That's quite a rare thing, first time that's happened to me anyway.

Any behind the scenes stories?
Well not much to be said apart from I approached Kyle before Christmas with the concept and he was up for it, I offered to design the storyboard to save time and money and he was ok with that. So I did a hand-drawn storyboard for the whole thing and he took that and made it the beautiful thing that it is today. I had total faith that he would pull it off and he did just that and more. We absolutely love how it turned out.

Tell us about the ideas/ themes/ imagery used?
Well we've always been fans of artist Saul Bass and the video (as well as the album artwork) imagery was certainly inspired by his work. There's also a nod to the cult video game 'Limbo', the film noir genre and perhaps Chinese shadow puppetry, which we're also big fans of. We definitely wanted a dark but hopeful feel to the video, which I believe was achieved in the narrative.

What is the message of the video trying to convey?
I saw a documentary last year about the unbelievably dangerous journeys refugees take across Europe out of sheer desperation for theirs and their children’s safety, something that any of us would do. This inspired the lyrics for ‘Altogether Not Together’ and the video concept. As a concept, I wanted to focus on the children of the refugee camp known as 'The Jungle' and the juxtaposition of children playing in the midst of a hopeless situation.
