Single Review: Cavalry - 'Heresy'

Liverpool's Cavalry  release 'Heresy', the brooding first look at their forthcoming EP, 'See The Night Perform'.

We can't believe it's been a year and a half since we last heard new music from Cavalry, but good things come to those who wait and 'Heresy' is a really great song for the band to come back with.

Opening with shivering, mesmerizing textures and a relaxed beat, 'Heresy' makes for an otherworldly listen, pulling its listener in with a magnetism and charm that is immediate.  Lead singer Alan's vocal is earthy and welcoming, taking on a conversational tone that is in equal parts defeated and reassuring.

As the track develops, it ups both tempo and intensity, fleshing out into a frenzied indie folk anthem that hits full throttle. My favourite part of the song is the searing guitar riffs whose oddly beguiling  presence simmers throughout the track, almost masquerading as an all-knowing entity that I find quite comforting.

Around the 2 minute 25 second mark the song takes an interesting direction. The soundscape becomes an echo unto itself, a call into the void, distorted and dream-like, haunting.  With that in mind, "'Heresy' finds the band thematically informed by the present – asking where hope can be found in an unnoticed dystopia where once modern fears are normalised"

Exciting times are still to come as Cavalry gear up to hit the road in November ahead of their EP release. Dates to be announced shortly!
