Q&A: An interview with DEEPSTEP
Russian-American musician, DJ, singer-songwriter, record producer, director and entrepreneur, DEEPSTEP, took some time out to chat to us so we could get to know him a bit better!
You graduated from Music School in Moscow with a piano performance Major. Who would you say are inspirations to you in the classical world?
One of my inspirations in the classical world is Tchaikovsky who composed masterpieces such as Swan Lake and The Nutcracker.
Are there any major differences you've noticed between the music scene in Russia and that in America where you're now based?
American music industry takes a leading place in the number of producing artists. It's all a matter of professionalism and the ability to bring forward an amazing end product. Production and the music itself is of outstanding quality in the US. On the other hand, Russian music culture is very different and it's only beginning to rise to the bar that was set by the American music industry.
You wrote your first EDM track in 1997! Who were the kind of DJs/artists back then who you found influential?
I was a big fan of Scooter. They were huge in Russia and Europe back then.
Each time you bring out a new track it seems to be met with a lot of love. How do you keep your sound fresh and exciting?
I am one of those artists who likes to bring something new to the table with each of my new tracks. My taste in music is constantly evolving so I try to evolve my production as well.
Imagine you were hosting a fantasy dinner party. You can invite 5 famous people from across all of time ever and any profession. Who would you invite and why? What would be on the menu?
Oh it will be a fantasy mix of people with different interests and professions so we can discuss all kinds of subjects. From Nikola Tesla and Leonardo da Vinci to Pyotr Tchaikovsky, Mikhail Bulgakov and Dalai Lama. And of course only the vegan food on the menu.
As the year draws to a close it's only natural to reflect. What have been a couple of your favourite accomplishments this year as a DJ, singer-songwriter, record producer, director and entrepreneur?
This year was the biggest year in my music career. My songs have been played over a million times in the last 3 months. I was featured on LA's 103.9 FM radio station. My music videos are on music TV channels all around the world. To me it was a good year and a great start after a long break.
And lastly, what do you have planned for 2018?
More music, more videos and more tours.
