The Artist Explains: Aisha Badru - 'Bridges'

New York musician Aisha Badru speaks to us about her music video for poignant single, 'Bridges'.

Aisha Badru Explains
Where was the video for 'Bridges' filmed?
“Bridges” was filmed in Los Angeles California.

How does the video connect with the song?
Director, Nathan Presley, did a great job of interpreting my lyrics and transposing it to film. The video seamlessly connects with the song by depicting a couple in love who encounter a struggle where they are being ripped apart and have to fight to stay together.

Could you tell us about the ideas/ themes/ imagery used?
The most powerful imagery used in the video is the scene in the hotel room where the male character morphs into three doppelgängers of himself. These lookalikes represent his “shadow self”. The shadow-self is the darker aspects and desires of ourselves that pull us away from our true intentions.

What is the message the video is trying to convey?
The music video is trying to convey that there may be times in an intimate relationship where one person needs some time to deal with internal battles alone. They are metaphorically at war themselves. These internal battles can include depression, substance abuse, or feeling lost in life and unsure about where to go next. It takes a lot of understanding, grounding, and compassion to endure these unpleasant, yet, very realistic hurdles. Now, that’s not to say that every relationship is meant to last; some will be washed away on the shore and that is perfectly okay, but others will withstand the storm and become stronger.
