Band of the Week #0040 - Pretty Pistol

This week's Band of the Week, is in your face garage punk band Pretty Pistol, their EP 'Welcome To The Dead Club' is out today via SaySomething Records.

The EP is filled with that old school punk edge; gritty, fast paced and like having your head peacefully kicked in. Featuring singles 'Cry Wolf' and 'Drive me to the Dogs', and new tracks 'Hurricane' and 'No Guts (This is Glory)', the EP takes you on the adventure into the world of Pretty Pistol. Sitting there nicely with bands like Be Your Own Pet, Petrol Girls and early Gallows, but there is also elements of funk and other genres. The track 'Hurricane' despite a fast paced punk track, has that fantastic guitar riff sitting there in it, making you almost want to mosh while also having a dance off!

We had a chat with the band about the EP -

What are the ideas and themes behind the EP?
When we did our first EP ‘Bones’, we were kind of finding our feet. We tried out a lot of different ideas and it was all very rooted in pretty messy personal experiences. We love it, but it’s kind of all over the place. On ‘Welcome to the Dead Club’, we’ve figured out who we are, what we’re about and nailed down our sound. Basically we’ve got our shit together. The songs are maybe less internal; we’re looking outside for ideas instead of having to deal with what’s going on inside.

How would you describe it to someone who has never listened to you before?
It sounds like having your teeth kicked in. In a good way. Like having your teeth kicked in, then being handed a pint by the person who kicked your teeth in.

Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories?
It was recorded over a couple of weekends at Outhouse Studios in Reading with the legend John Mitchell. We all got horrifically drunk one night, so drunk that one of us - we won’t say who, to preserve what little dignity this person has left - got up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet, only to be told that they were actually pissing all over a chair in the corner of the room. They still deny it to this day, but the person whose clothes were on that chair remembers it pretty well.

What are the plans for the rest of the year?
We’ve got something very special in the works to finish off the release of this EP, then we’re doing a few shows outside of London, because there is life outside of London, believe it or not. We’ll be hitting the studio again to record some more music before the year is out, so hold on to your hats.
