In Conversation With - LUCIA
With their EP ‘Cheap Talk’ out now we had a chat with LUCIA ahead of their appearance at The Courtyard Theatre in London, as part of Great Escape Festival’s ‘First Fifty’ shows.
For those who may not be familiar with you as a band, can you give us a little introduction to how you first got together?
We were all in different bands in Glasgow, and we just met through the Glasgow music scene. We have now been together for around 2 and a half years.
The songs vary from being pop, indie and a bit of disco. Who are your musical inspirations?
We have so many inspirations. I grew up listening to 70s/80’s disco so that’s probably where that comes from. The 90s’ pop/grunge world is something that we are very influenced by, Garbage, No Doubt, Hole. Our first EP was inspired by more 70’s artists like Blondie and also the pixies. So mix those all together and this is what you get.
There seems to be an air of lightheartedness and the search for enjoyment on the EP. Can you talk us through the songwriting process?
We spent a lot of time last year and this year writing, and we eventually had these four songs and we knew they were the ones for the EP. They are all different vibes but make up to all be about teenage years, and talk about past experiences compared to life now.
Was it a conscious effort to keep most of the songs under the three minute mark?
Not always but we like to keep it short and sweet.
Can you tell us about the shoot for the EP cover?
The EP cover is meant to represent all four tracks. Each object connects to one of them.
Who are some of your favourite new bands on the scene?
Lizzie Reid from Glasgow, one of the best live bands I have seen all year. I love listening to Our Girl too; I like every single song they have released.
You’ve been doing a lot of touring recently, so I wonder what would be your dream line-up to play with and to watch?
Hole (So I can here Malibu live), Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue, (so they can play ‘Where the wild roses grow’) Madonna, and The Cardigans.
