The Band Explains: Silent Rival - 'Just One Voice'

LA's Silent Rival speak to us about their American Horror Story Freak Show themed visuals for single, 'Just One Voice'.  'Just One Voice' is an energetic and confident alternative rock song with a hard-hitting message.

Silent Rival's Sara Coda Explains:
Where was the video for 'Just One Voice' filmed?

It was shot in a warehouse in Downtown Toronto by the brilliant Lisa Mann.

How does the video connect with the song?
The song is a song for outcasts and we wanted to illustrate that concept literally with a “Freak Show.” We wanted a community of colorful, unique, bold, and authentic characters that have strength in numbers. Being in a band is kind of the same way. We never fit in much or were understood by many until we found other musicians who wanted to nerd out on playing music and writing tunes. Also, being in a band these days is pretty challenging. There’s no tried-and-true way to go about anything anymore. We are just forging ahead into the unknown, taking each obstacle as it comes, one at a time. And our biggest resource is our belief in and support of one another.

Any behind the scenes stories?
It was a laid back experience for us. We wanted to work with Lisa because she GOT IT, we knew she was going to give us what we were imagining but BETTER. We let her run with the idea. She is hands on, involved, and detail-oriented. All we had to do was relax a play the song a few times. We had a fun day getting to watch the other performers display their talents. We love that the video isn’t all about us. Giving others the floor and trusting them to shine is what made this video successful in our eyes. Everyone was just being themselves and it worked.

Could you tell us about the ideas/ themes/ imagery used?
Sure! We had a knife juggler, a bed of nails, poodles, a contortionist, a stilt walker, and more! The scene is in a dilapidated warehouse where these weird characters have come to just be themselves and maybe join forces. Lisa Mann captured a lot of beautiful scenes like the stilt walkers orange organza skirt flowing like a cloud of fog. The aesthetic is a balance of strength and beauty. And what happens when the clown juggles the knives??? You’ll have to watch to find out.

Is there a message the video is trying to convey?
The message is... you’re not alone. If you feel like a weirdo, welcome to our world. Feel free to shine here.
