GRAE has just dropped her debut EP ‘New Girl, and it is four tracks of beautifully personal pop, which sees GRAE at her most honest. She took a moment to talk us through the release - track by track.

New Girl: ‘New Girl’ was written about my high school ex who ended up with the girl he told me not to worry about when we were together. I’ll never forget the day I found out, I went home and started writing right away, I was so upset which is funny to look back on, because I’m so over that now. BOY BYE!

Your Hands: ‘Your Hands’ was written about a manipulative relationship. I’ve found myself in a couple of those, and that song was about taking my power back. I started writing it one night when I was super angry at this guy, sucks for him though cause now I’ve got a dope song out of it.

Woman’s World: ‘Woman’s World’ is all about women empowerment. My best friend Diana and I had a horrible night out, we were getting grabbed at, catcalled and even followed by men in the streets. I got so passionately angry over the fact that women just deal with that sh*t. So I decided to write about it, in hopes of opening a door to a conversation about how it needs to end.

Fade To Black: ‘Fade To Black’ is a very special song to me. Writing and releasing this one into the world wasn’t easy. There was a moment where I wondered if it was almost too much and I questioned if I should’ve added it to the EP. I’m glad I did though.
It’s written from the perspective of me as a child, having watched my beautiful mother suffer from alcohol addiction. It was super tough to record and I remember thinking I wasn’t going to be able to do it, because of how emotional I got. I kept having to stop the recording process to take a moment for myself.
I want this song to bring awareness to addiction and mental health. I loved my mom so much, and I know she loved me immensely. This song is brutally honest because it’s written from a child’s perspective, I didn’t understand my mom’s addiction back then, all I wondered was why I wasn’t enough to stop it. Now being an adult, I understand the complexity of the situation, but when you’re a child you can’t. All you see is what’s in front of you.
‘Fade To Black’ is the final release off of the EP. KYAN and I created this project 2 years ago, and I’m so glad it’s finally out into the world.
