Track by Track: Lande Hekt - 'Gigantic Disappointment EP'

Lande Hekt is known as the vocalist and guitarist of Exeter indie punk band Muncie Girls, however she has struck it solo with her debut EP ‘Gigantic Disappointment’. The EP almost feels like a musical diary for Lande as she expresses feelings and reflections from her past year. She took a moment to talk to us about the release - track by track.

Wake Up
‘Wake Up’ refers to the time difference on the other side of the world.

The Future
This song is mainly about climate change including the first line I’ve ever written referencing the subject. It’s an homage to my friend who taught me that you can’t ignore environmental issues and showed me how scary it all is.
It’s also a song about getting older, trying to exist in a truly horrible world and trying to be a good person (and often not succeeding).
The lyric “Give up alcohol, give up cigarettes, give up on a lot of things.” is an example of trying to better yourself, but maybe not having the energy to go the whole way.

Aeroplane
This song is about the first time I flew anywhere by myself. I flew to Australia to hang out with the person I was seeing. I’ve battled with anxiety for a long time and I keep trying to conquer my phobias, so this was a big moment for me.
The song is also about trying to make a relationship work when you’re 10,000 miles away.

Carpet
This song is about the weird feelings you get when your friends move away. It’s also about old habits and wishing you could stand up for yourself more.

Everything Ends
Pretty sure I wrote this song when I first gave up drinking and felt really isolated from social circles. The best way to make sure you don't drink is to not hang out with anyone who drinks, and everyone drinks. It was a super productive time for me creatively, but my mood suffered. The riff at the end is my best Sleater-Kinney impression.

 Letter
This song is really old. I was remembering it on my guitar in my friend’s house and she said she liked the sound of it so I thought I’d bring it back. It’s so old, it originally said “car” instead of “van” because it was written before we’d ever toured in a van. We used to pile into a tiny car and have all our merch sat on our laps for 10 days.

Gigantic Disappointment
I was listening to A LOT of Replacements when I wrote this song.
The appointment in the song refers to a therapy appointment and it was a time when I was prioritising getting my shit together over dating.
