Inspired #0064 - Liza Anne
Liza Anne has retuned with an explosive new single ‘Devotion’, she took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind the track.
Who are you top three musical inspirations?
Kate Bush, Lizzo and Feist. Because they are all woman who are not afraid of taking up space.
Is there a certain film that inspires you?
The Before Trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight). It’s such a casual window of real time, catching the simplicity of connecting with someone in a very candid light and watching how that specific pair of connection comes in and out of view over the course of each persons whole life. I am really constantly inspired by those sort of small windows of time given great emotion because I feel like that is the way I take in life, anyways.
What city do you find the most inspiring?
Paris. It’s the only place that equally slows me down and fills me up. My days and nights feel three times the length there. It seems to be the place I have consistently gone when I need to be reminded of myself.
Who is the most inspiring person to you?
Today is my dad’s 53rd birthday so I’m thinking about him a lot today. He’s a man who is not afraid of softness and tenderness and that is what it means to be a good man. With all that’s going on politically in the states, we’ve had some really groundbreaking moments of connecting and seeing each other. He’s been the first to stand up for me, beside me and empower me to really voice myself, fight for myself and stand up for what is collective forward movement. I am really lucky.
What were your inspirations when writing the track?
That freeing feeling when you let yourself loose from that grip of “things have to work” in a toxic relationship. That immediate relief that you’re your own person again. I won’t ever be in love that takes away my own personhood again, I’m sure that’s not even “in love” at all. That’s letting yourself be swallowed into something that is eventually going to blur out all the bits of you that are most true. Love gives you more of you, that’s the simple truth.
How would you like to inspire people?
I want to inspire people to make more room for themselves, make more space for all moments of emotion and to really love themselves, in every form that they will inhabit, through every emotion - heavy and light. There’s always room for more self love and more self care.
