Introducing #0093 - LAULIA

Let us introduce you to Surrey based alternative quartet LAULIA, who has just signed to Rose Colored Records. The band have building quite the reputation for themselves after being including on Blood Record’s ‘Girls Against’ compilation, which featured the likes of Dream Wife, Hinds and Courtney Barnett.
Along with signing to the label the band have announced a double A side single ’13/7’ and ‘Outcast Kids’. We had a chant with the band about the release and their future plans.

Your new track ’13/7’ is out now, what is the track about?
13/7 is very much a song about monotony and habit within relationships. We often feel it’s our job to take care of the people we love, but at times, we have to accept that their self-destructive behaviours can begin to take a toll on our lives. This is often quite difficult to see; it’s so easy to be lead down the road with someone, and it’s so difficult to ‘snap out of it’ so to speak. Sometimes it comes down to the choice of loving yourself or loving someone else, and 13/7 is about coming to terms with that.

Where was the track recorded? Can you share any behind scenes stories about the recording process?
13/7 was one of the first songs that snowballed very quickly with the band. The initial idea musically was sent to Lauren, who was instantly inspired, finishing the lyrics and melody that evening. By the time the song came to band rehearsal, it very quickly came together. It was the most excited we had been as a band all writing together, as it happened so quickly and felt so right from day one. From there we had studio time already booked with Thomas Hill (a good friend of ours, and producer at ‘The Bookhouse Studio’) and we decided, last minute almost, to have this as our next single. We were really happy with the decision as recording stuff new and fresh really helps to avoid songs being overproduced.

The track is a double A side with other track ‘Outcast Kids’, what is that track about? And what made you decide to release it as a double A side?
Outcast kids is a story about two lovers who have a very self destructive neurosis. The pair turn to each other for reassurance and comfort, justifying their negative choices because the other is doing the same thing. Whilst this dynamic is not conventional, there’s something beautiful about the bond they have. Their love is honest and goes far beyond a surface level relationship. Though their connection is far stronger than most, with this dynamic, the relationship is inevitably doomed. Though I suppose, being self destructive people, that’s what they love most about it. Whilst the song displays a softer, more atmospheric side of us, B sides are often seen as a slightly more ‘out there’ take on the mood of the main single. Outcast Kids, for us, didn’t feel it was going to work as a diminutive alter ego to the first song, it has too much of an impact.

You have just signed to Rose Colored Records, how did that partnership come about? How does it feel?
Andy from Rose Coloured Records has always been a good friend, and supporter of the band. We love what he’s doing for new bands/artists and always wanted to work together with him on a release. Joining forces to make 13/7 / Outcast Kids a reality felt like the right step forwards for us, we love working with new people and this whole experience has been something totally different from what we’re used to. We’re all extremely grateful to Andy for his hard work and support, as a genuine music fan, his intensions are nothing but what you’d want from a label. We’re lucky to have him on side.

Now the track is out there, what are your plans for the next months?
The coming months are gonna be pretty crazy for us I think. Once we’ve come out the other end of celebrating this release, we wanna get straight onto working towards another record. The next step for us is putting out an EP, we’d love something that really introduces us to the world and shows everyone what we’re really about as a band. We’re still very new and we’re still kind of shaking the hands of everyone at the moment. The next coming months I think we really want to start breaking the ice within the industry, and with our supporters as well. We want people to know who we are and what were about, and feel a part of that. So plenty of shows, tours, and connecting with people is what we want to work towards. That and getting an EP out are our main focus’s. Oh, and Glastonbury of course.
