Manchester based Abbie Ozard has just released her retro indie pop track ‘Growing Pains’, still fresh in the music world, Abbie has already managed to capture the attention of Blossums and Radio 1’s Huw Stephens. She talks to us about Bon Iver, Berlin and how she would like to inspire people.

Who are you top three musical inspirations?
Bon Iver
- I have always been obsessed with vernon’s melodies and use of instrumentals, although my music doesn’t really sound inspired by vernon’s i am continually in awe of what he creates and how brave he is with his experimentation of genres. He has always been my favourite musician and will probably continue to inspire me forever.
The 1975- I don’t know whether this is classed as a guilty pleasure or not haha but i love matty’s use of honest lyricism. I think if you have an honest approach to songwriting you’re always going to prefer playing them as every song will mean something to you.
The Cure- i grew up listening to The Cure as my mum and dad were both big fans so i guess they’ve been embedded into my brain. Their jangly melodies are timeless and i never ever get bored of them, they write the best pop songs for everyone to enjoy or cry to, the best!!

Is there a certain film that inspires you?
literally any coming of age film, i love films that also look aesthetically pleasing wherever you pause it. My favourite film of all time is ‘About Time’, i think the whole premise has this beautiful outlook on life. Inspiration for my music wise i love ’The Edge of Seventeen’ and ‘Juno’ they depict growing up in such truthful ways, the sound tracks are also absolutely banging.

What city do you find the most inspiring?
I went to Berlin last year and i thought it was amazing how every individual looked different or never got looked at for dressing differently so i guess Berlin as the music scene is mad there too, i’ve never been a massive fan of cities as i’ve always thought people are very caught up in their own lives but Berlin stood out a lot to me.

Who is the most inspiring person to you?
Definitely my mum. She is my best mate I go to her for anything, she’s done so much too and is willing to work as hard as she can to achieve her goals which i respect massively. We are pretty much the same person too which helps a lot haha.

How would you like to inspire people?
I’d like to inspire girls to be more strong and to be able to stick up for themselves in creative industries. It’s hard out there and if there are more female musicians everywhere we can all start to support each other a bit more.
