The Artist Explains: DanielFromSalem - 'So Loco'

DanielFromSalem talks us through his exhilarating visuals for hip hop, alternative rock and rap fusion song, ‘So Loco’.

Where was the video for ‘So Loco’ filmed?
The Video was filmed in Santa Monica, CA at the pier.

How does the video connect with the song?
The song is themed around a desire to escape and longing for something new but not sure where to find it. Sometimes you just have to get away and just go somewhere new. The pier represents a fun lit up experience to contrast the story of darkness and confusion. The spinning camera shots and colourful lights are used to convey my frantic mindset and give a look into my imagination. I'm using the video imagery to show you what's going on inside my head. There is a party in my head and everyone's invited.

Do you have any behind the scenes stories you could share with us?
Yeah, there was suppose to be a shot of me riding a carousel but the lady said we couldn’t film on the carousel. People were also pointing at me a lot as we filmed and we got kicked out of the arcade during filming. A lot of bumps involved trying to get shots but I expect the unexpected and stayed focused. There was suppose to be a shot at the end where I jump off the pier but decided against it. I was gonna look back and wink and then jump off the pier. I was so down to do it but we realised if I broke my leg we would have to stop the video.

Can you tell us about the ideas/ themes/ imagery used?
Yeah, I want to really make the listener feel like they are going on this crazy emotional ride with me. The spinning shots represent the insane spiral and loss of control. The sped up shots capture the feeling of disconnect from the world and feeling like you don't fit in. The outfit was used to send a message. The colours mean something personal to me. The end of the video shows that sometimes the path you find seems scary but you just gotta go with it if you want to move forward. You may have to kiss the old you goodbye and start again as something different. The ending shows the start of my new path. This story will unfold in my future work.

Is there a message the video is trying to convey?
Sometimes you just gotta get away to figure stuff out. Find a new path. Join something or someone. Life is what you make it. Make your own destiny. If someone hurts you then leave them. Don't stress, look at me, I'm a mess. You may fall down get your heart broken but it is never the end, you can always start again.

What do you hope people take away from watching the video?
If you feel like you don't fit in or you are confused. You are not alone. I'm a basket case and I'm ugly and don't fit in. I feel this way and this is why I make music, to connect and help other outcasts. This video is my call for all the losers, freaks, and outcasts to see and let them know It's okay to be different. I have given so much of myself for this and I'm willing to walk with the darkness If it helps me inspire others. I make this art for you. Let this be your breakup anthem and remedy for what is hurting you or standing in your way.
