The Duo Explains: Moby Rich - 'Oil Spill'

Alternative pop duo Moby Rich speak to us about their tongue-in-cheek music video for ‘Oil Spill’ which explores news and TV’s influence on society.

Where was the video for ‘Oil Spill’ filmed?
We filmed the ‘Oil Spill’ video in an apartment here in LA. Was a tight fit, but was fun time making it.

How does the video connect with the song?

We talk a little bit about the influence of news and TV on people in the song. So we thought it would be funny to make it even more of a joke and have a bit of fun with it since the song is already pretty dark.

Do you have any behind the scenes stories you could share with us?
We needed to make some smoke in the room for the house fire scene. Luckily Maxwell had a CBD vape laying around, I stood under the front of the lens and blew smoke up into the camera. It was pretty funny, just really glad we didn’t have to stay quiet because we were laughing pretty hard. I think we have video of this too! Will try and find it and post soon.

Can you tell us about the ideas/themes/imagery used?
We were just trying to come up with everyday news situation that we could act out and tie in Moby Rich somehow. House fires, hurricanes, robberies, etc. There is also a bit of a meme going on about how there are always all these ridiculous “Florida Man” articles coming out all the time. We wanted to tie that in too.

Is there a message the video is trying to convey?
This video is for us, so we can laugh at the t that is social construct. Also, so we can see that we are fully capable of making our own decisions about what we want for our lives.
