The Artist Explains: Pallas Athene - 'The Wall'
Pallas Athene talks us through her newest single ‘The Wall’, which explores the virtual world and the constant overload of information on our social media newsfeed.
Your track 'The Wall' is out now, what is the meaning behind the title?
To me “The Wall” represents the limitations, restrictions and boundaries that we create that can sometimes keep us from connecting with our selves and with others. We all have something or some force that we feel is holding us back from breaking through our limitations and I think the wall of restriction presents itself in unique ways to different people.
What is the inspiration behind the song?
I wrote this song about a cold sense of isolation that I feel from being “super-connected” to my devices and social media. Everyone seems to be chasing some sort of 50s nuclear success dream (and of course projecting this persona of success, celebrity and perfection that is totally false, misleading and seriously destructive). This track is about the struggle to find real human connection of quality and value and longing to return to analog presence. It's about making peace with the virtual world on my own terms (since the internet is probably here to stay)…
Where was the track recorded? Are there any behind the scenes stories you are happy to share with us?
This track was made in my home studio out in Prince Edward County (Ontario). I recorded the vocals with an SM58 in one take and always meant to do a final re-record to remove the emotional “errors” and low fidelity. Even though it feels a little vulnerable, sometimes it’s nice to keep the mistakes.
What do you hope your listeners take from the song?
I just figure that hopefully there are some people out there that can relate to this track and that for them maybe this song could be a sort of cathartic acknowledgement of their feelings of isolation and loneliness.
Now the track is out there, what next? What are your plans for the next few months
It’s taken me a while to learn how to produce and record on my own so I’m really looking forward to releasing a lot of new music in the next year!
My EP is out in October so after that I’ll be spending most of my time playing shows and preparing to record a new full-length record in 2020.
