The Band Explains: tummyache - 'Machine'

Soren Bryce of tummyache talks to us about the band’s light and fun visuals for ,‘Machine’, which celebrates friendship and the importance of never taking your support system for granted.

Where was the footage for 'Machine' filmed?
The footage for ‘Machine’ was filmed in Nashville sporadically between tours in 2019, mostly in the directors house and backyard as well as the back of my mini van! Haha.

How does the video connect with the song?
I really wanted to be able to showcase how important my friends have been in my life, especially since that’s the sentiment of both verses in ‘Machine’. I also wanted people to see that tummyache may have serious subject matter behind songs, but we also are able to be light and have fun and enjoy each other too, in our lives.

Do you have any behind the scenes stories you can share with us?
Well I would say that driving around in the back of a van is TERRIFYING. We may look easy breezy beautiful but oh man behind my eyes you can see the faintest hint of impending doom. Also, please don’t try that at home kids.

Could you tell us about the ideas/ themes/ imagery used?

I’d been really stumped on what to do for the ‘Machine’ video. I knew I had talented pals that wanted to make it but had no idea what to do for it. What really inspired the whole video was I saw our bass player Linda’s front door system, I think it’s called RING, and it’s a really cool wide angle shot of her porch. Thought it looked pretty sweet, told William that was my only idea, and being the multi-capable person he is, he created THIS. I love them! (William McClatchey + Wil Kelly).

Is there a message the video is trying to convey?
I guess what I’d say is it’s not all that serious. Not in the sense that you shouldn’t care or feel certain ways about things in your life, but in the end all you really have is right now and the people around you, and you should enjoy that. I’ve worked really hard on developing that the last two years and as an incidental side effect I’ve ended up creating my favourite art of my entire career.
I just want to say thank you so much again to my sweet beautiful friends for being in this video, to my band for being here for me through all of this, to William and Wil for bringing this to life, and to today for giving me right now. Much love. X soren
