Inspired #160 - Keeper. E
Keeper E. writes playful pop tracks fueled with heart and passion, pulling the audience in so that they can experience everything together. Her debut track ‘Please Don’t Tell Me’ shows off some huge potential on where this artist can go with her music, drawing in influences from the likes of Phoebe Bridgers and mxmtoon.
Keeper E. took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind the track.
Who are your top three musical inspirations?
Sylvan Esso is a big inspiration for me. I love the way they layer their sounds and how they build textures. I am also really inspired by Mistki, especially by her lyrics. I love how she just says whatever she wants, and she says things that have the potential to be kind of embarrassing, but when she sings about it, it is relatable and powerful. I am also inspired by Vampire Weekend and Rostam, I love their production and I love the Rostam's songs for their different forms (i.e. not just verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus), and for the instrumentation.
Is there a certain film that inspires you?
I am inspired by basically every film I see. I used to go to be a part of a film society when I lived in Sackville NB and every Thursday we would watch a film together and then almost every week I would write a song right after. I love the way movies can really give you a taste of someone else's life experience, and I love to explore and imagine more of what different people's lives are like afterwards by writing a song. My favourite movie that always inspires me to do something creative is Frances Ha.
What city do you find the most inspiring?
I find it really exciting and inspiring to be in any city where there are a lot of people doing creative things. I found it super inspiring to live in the small town of Sackville, NB, just because there are four or five art galleries in a town of 5000 people, and there were always tons of artistic events going on, craft nights every week, film society every week, artist talks several times per month, live music every week, etc. I find travelling to any new city is a great way to spark inspiration though, and to see new things to help you think of new things.
What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
I wrote this song when in the very beginning stages of falling in love with someone. I was in university, so I was learning lots of stuff in school, and also I felt like I was really making myself at home in the town, and in my own body. I was thinking a lot about what it means to be a woman, what it means to be in a relationship, and how to love myself best.
How would you like to inspire people?
Especially with this song, I hope to inspire people to really embrace themselves and love themselves and to know their worth as a person. I hope that all my songs can fill people with love and appreciation for themselves and others and the world. (haha cheesy I know).
