Sydney based indie-pop act merci, mercy has just released her debut EP ‘no thank you, no thanks’ via Liberation Records. This bundle of tracks gives pop a new perspective - a new angle to think about - although it is filled with anthems it also holds an intimate atmosphere at the same time. She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind and music and the release.

Who are your top three musical inspirations?
I don’t have anyone specific who inspires me, life around me is mostly what inspires me. I do admire artists though who are honest and vulnerable in their music. Who are not afraid to write about the things that matter to them the most. Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse for example are two artists who did not give a flying fuck what people thought about them. They wrote what was in their head and didn’t change it for anybody. You can’t help how you think or feel and thats why I believe it’s important to be as honest as you can, instead of living with it on your own. I’m inspired by artists who don’t water down their shit.

Is there a certain film that inspires you?
I really like films that show the trials and tribulations that people face from day to day. Teens drinking too much and getting themselves into trouble, not knowing who they are and taking out their feelings on others because they are lost. Same goes for adults too. I like raw and honest movies because they can make me feel less alone.

What city do you find the most inspiring?
Whatever city I am in at the time, the city where i’m experiencing life and being troubled in.

Who is the most inspiring person to you?
My sister is the most inspiring person to me because she has always done what she’s wanted and she hasn’t taken any less. She works hard but she always stays true to her self and she has always made sure I do the same.

What were your inspirations when writing the EP?
The inspirations for the EP were from my own life experiences. I wanted it to be a look inside the mind of the 18 year old me who was all over the place. I was lonely and feeling lost and I ended up using alcohol to ease the pain.

How would you like to inspire people?
I would like to help people be honest with how they are feeling and not to be afraid of what people might think if they do. It doesn’t make you crazy for feeling the way you are feeling.
