Band Of The Week #145 - The Paranoyds
This week’s Band of the Week is Los Angeles four piece The Paranoyds, who have just released their new EP ‘Pet Cemetery’ via Suicide Squeeze Records. Following on from their previous release ‘Carnage Bargain’, they once again blend the influences of garage rock and horror movies to create their own adventurous sound. They took a moment to talk to us in more depth about the release.
Hey The Paranoyds, how are you? How does it feel to be releasing music during this strange time for the creative industry?
Hey! Relatively good. It doesn’t feel bad—you gotta do what you do. Obviously this isn’t ideal, as we love to see our fans IRL. But we will take all we can get in 2020 right?
It has been almost a year since your debut album was released, how does this EP differ from the album?
We recorded Pet Cemetery at the same studio as our album Carnage Bargain at Station House in Echo Park but the B-side ‘Hotel Celebrity’ was recorded at Tiny Telephone San Francisco.
It features just two songs - ‘Pet Cemetery’ and ‘Hotel Celebrity’ - is there a connection between them?
‘Pet Cemetery’ is an October romance and ‘Hotel Celebritiy' is the adult playground sing a long that’s an homage to the Angelyne type legends of LA
What are the themes and influences behind both songs?
Pet Cemetery is completely based on the original horror movie lyric wise. Was kind of going for a super simple Cramps bass line that gets extra dirty. Hotel Celebrity is more of a girl group gone wrong…Shangri-La’s chime in’s with a 2020 twist.
Do you have a favorite lyric from the EP? If so, which one and why?
“Add to cart; Ambien” - I can’t explain why.
There is a clear dose of horror movie influences when it comes to your sound, if you were to star in you own horror movie, who out of the band would die first and why?
I don’t think any of us would die cos we’re badass but either way we’d just bury whoever dies in the Pet Cemetery and they’d come back. So we good.
Now this EP is out there, are we seeing the possibility of album number two in the works?
Well it’s definitely not gonna fall into the worm hole that is 2020…we’re feeling pretty Mr. Brightside about 2021 tho.
