Mai Kino has just released a beautiful video for her new single ‘Swim’, the track is a stunning lullaby about birth and new life. She took a moment to talk to us about the track and the things that inspire her.

Who are you top three musical inspirations and why?
I like to let things out organically when I write…but there are definitely artists who informed my taste throughout the years.  I grew up with Kurt Cobain’s songwriting, Laurie Anderson’s inter-disciplinary world and I’m very into experimental music and minimal techno.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
I like ‘Pierrot Le Fou’ by Godard , it’s one big visual poem…

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Definitely London, where I live…for its diversity and making me feel like anything is possible.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
My grandmother who passed away a few years ago, I often write with her in mind.

What were your inspirations when writing the track?
My niece had just been born a few days after my birthday…and I imagined what it must be like to come into this world for the very first time.
She’s a Pisces like myself, so that inspired the word Swim, but the metaphor goes beyond that. It’s about survival and forward movement.

How would you like to inspire people?
I’d like to do for other people what music has done for me… to make them feel less lonely and connected to something larger than themselves.
