The Artist Explains: WAKEONE - 'LATELY'
Los Angeles based artist WAKEONE speaks to us about his self-produced music video and debut single, ‘LATELY’, which uses mostly drone footage to capture his time in Bali.
Where was the video for ‘LATELY’ filmed?
The video was filmed all over Bali during the course of a trip I took out there.
How does the video connect with the song?
The song itself was written during a pretty dark time in my life and I wanted to contrast the feeling of the lyrics with the bright otherworldly visuals that I was seeing.
Do you have any behind the scenes stories you can share with us?
Every single scene except for the last minute on the mountain was filmed with a drone programmed to a certain path, I had to do multiple takes each time as I was by myself and couldn't see the shots as they were being captured but it was very fun. I remember during the opening scene I drove an hour and half on my scooter to these rice paddies my friend had told me about, I had about 30min to shoot the full performance before it started raining and the sun set but luckily I was able to knock it out no problem.
Could you tell us about the ideas/themes/imagery used?
I am very free flow when I create, for this video I had an outline of what I wanted to do visually but let the moment kind of dictate how it was going to go down, the locations themselves were the contrast to the song so I did not have to search very hard to get what I wanted.
Is there a message the video is trying to convey?
There's always a light at the end of the tunnel. As corny as that sounds everything is temporary and just like the song says, lately things might be certain way but tomorrow the sun will rise again.
