The Artist Explains: Lilla Vargen - 'Cold'

Lilla Vargen chats to us about her intimate visuals for ‘Cold’ which shines a light on the many forms of abuse in relationships.

Where was the video for 'Cold' filmed?
It was filmed in Wicklow - it’s actually the same house that the film Frank was shot in which is a cool little fact!

How does the video connect with the song?
The song is about me reflecting on an unhealthy relationship and the feelings I had during it. For the video I wanted to portray that abuse isn’t necessarily always physical, and that whilst it’s the most easily recognisable, emotional abuse also plays a huge part in toxic relationships.

Do you have any behind the scenes stories you could share with us?
The final scene is actually inspired by a scene that I love from a film called ’Never Let Me Go’ - that build which then explodes at the end with the emotion reaching this real crescendo. Jordanne perfectly captures that exhaustion, relief and sadness in the walking out on someone that you know isn’t right for you.

Can you tell us about the ideas/themes/imagery used?
It portrays a young woman trapped in an abusive relationship, and the emotional turmoil that comes with it. I actually recorded a slightly different version of the song lyrically in order to show a little more positivity - it’s about moving on from a negative relationship, and not being trapped in it.

Is there a message the video is trying to convey?
It’s shining a light on this all too common issue that affects thousands of women every day. Abuse isn’t always as obvious as it may seem at first, and exists in so many different forms.
