The Artist Explains: MOTTRON - 'Fire'
French composer/producer MOTTRON speaks to us about his curious visuals for his dreamy indie pop single, 'Fire’, the 3rd episode of his music video series directed by Olivier Groulx (Alt-J).
Where was the video for ‘Fire’ filmed?
This music video was, along with the others, shot during our four days trip to Vancouver, Canada. Everything had to be done rather precisely considering each day was dedicated to a single song.
How does the video connect with the song?
The video transcribes the lyrics in a metaphorical way. In Fire, I sing about the problematics inherent to sharing and connecting with others, artistically and personally. The video shows it as an escape, an introspective retreat in the literal sense.
Do you have any behind the scenes stories you could share with us?
Unfortunately no, everyone was extremely focused because of the restricted timeline so we shot according to the script with little to no detour.
Can you tell us about the ideas/themes/imagery used?
The previous music video “They Know” featured the character presenting his music (forcefully so, at least in his mind) to an audience. “Fire” was, in a way, the questions and afterthoughts resulting from this confrontation. The levitation, the distant woods, all were used to convey that idea. At the very end, you can see the character swaying towards the distance through a fresh snow where no-one had yet walked upon.
Is there a message the video is trying to convey?
No message per se, but I believe other artists are, at the rise of their professionalisation, confronted to those type of angsts so I wanted to talk about it.
