Play Dead – ‘Whitstable’

The perfect track for going to the seaside.

South London garage punk trio Play Dead don’t mess about. Their debut single ‘Whitstable’ clocks in at a blistering 101 seconds and that is all they need. Play Dead know how to utilise the ‘less is more’ ethic in their song writing perfectly.

The cockney grunt of the vocals in ‘Whitstable’ are sarcastic and the repetitive gnarly guitar riff is head turner for anyone into The Chats and Amyl and The Sniffers. There’s no bull shit or beating around the bush, as the song structure is similar to the Ramones school of song writing of a great riff, a catchy melody and just repeating it a few times. On paper, it sounds boring, but it works for Play Dead brilliantly.
