Let us introduce you to Inland Murmur, who have just released their new single ‘Icarus’. The London based band tick all the right boxes for indie nostalgia but given it a new modern punch. We had a chat with the band about city life and how the new track came together.

So, you new track ‘Icarus’ is out now - can you tell us what the track is about?
We wrote this track whilst on a recent trip to California. We were really inspired by the landscapes and the sense of openness and possibility. We’re all at points in our life where things seem to be changing all the time. There’s a sense of enormity about staring change in the face but then there’s the realisation that others around you are going through the same thing and that’s comforting; ‘we both felt the same, watching the sun rise, on the far side of the lake’.

Where as it recorded?
We recorded the track at Hackney Road Studios, London with the wonderful Pedro Caetano, of Sad Boys Club fame. We’ve worked there in the past- it’s a great space with lots of cool gear. It’s always a pleasure to work with Pedro. His direction as a producer helped shape the track and we’re really happy with the result.

Where are you from? And what is it famous for?
Hannah and I (Toby) grew up in rural south West Wales- famous for its beautiful countryside, its culture and its sheep. We’re incredibly lucky to have grown up in such an inspiring place amongst the most supportive group of neighbours and friends. As a band we’re based in London- specifically South East London, where there’s less sheep.

Do you go to any local music venues?
We’ve played a lot around South East London and it’s definitely where we feel most at home. We like the New Cross Inn and love Matchstick Piehouse- who put on lots of awesome theatre as well as great music. We’ve played some great gigs at the Spice of Life too and have fond memories of that venue.

Who would you say are your key musical influences?
I’d love to say our taste is super eclectic but I think as a band we certainly lean toward the rock/ indie side of things. We love Death Cab for Cutie, Rush, The Police, Biffy Clyro and Kings of Leon. I (Toby) also play drums in another band, Mathilde Bataille, and I’m always inspired by her song-craft and style.

Now the track is out there, what next?
Obviously, life has been turned upside down somewhat in the past month or so and many plans had to be put on hold for the short term. We plan to get back into the studio when we can and get some more singles out before the end of the year. We have some London gigs lined up for later in the year too and we look forward to seeing all our wonderful fans at some of those. In the meantime we’re using lockdown to re-string some guitars and to write some more songs!
