Let us introduce you to York’s newest shoegazers TIDES, who have just released their debut track ‘Hairspray’. The single sees the band mixing satirical lyricism with a dream pop eighties melody. They took a moment to talk to us about viking, Judy Dench and how the band came together.

Hey Tides, how are you?
We're good thanks! Can't wait to get back to normal life though so we can work on recording and playing more shows.

Your debut track ‘Hairspray’ is out now, can you tell us what the track is about?
I was basically fed up of talking to a certain type of boy and I wanted to write a song about it. Hairspray is an ironic take on a particular type of teen angst and self-destructive nihilism. I wanted to kind of take the mick out of those pseudo-intellectual qualities that make me laugh. - Anja

How did the band start?
I'd been busking for a few years with Anja, playing covers and stuff like that. Charlie and I had played in a few other bands together where we gigged in social clubs and other places like that. I brought the two together over a slightly awkward jam. After a few drinks everyone clicked so we decided to start a new band. We started writing our own material and playing small gigs together and it was fun. I met Tom on a night out and we decided to jam together and it all just seemed to work!  - Joe

Where are you based and what is the area most famous for?
We're based in York. It's pretty famous for vikings, chocolate and Dame Judi Dench. - Charlie & Tom

Who would you say are your key musical influences?
This is the hardest question ever as we all have different musical tastes and take influence from loads of different stuff. The 1975 are a huge influence for us collectively. Individually, We love Lana Del Rey, Pale Waves, Fleetwood Mac, Lily Allen, Bad Sounds, Francis Dunnery and so many other people it's kinda crazy.
