Inspired #148 - East Of Queen

Following the release of her debut single last year, Kiwi singer-songwriter East Of Queen is back with her second track -‘Crickets’. The emotional guitar sounds really show off the unique vulnerability in this track, which deals with that ‘what if’ question when it comes to new love. She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind the track.

Who are your top three musical inspirations?
The Beatles - Because they pushed boundaries and changed the way music was perceived. Also, they wrote stunning, stunning songs!
Etta James - She sang from her heart and soul. Every note she sang had purpose and expressed so much joy and pain and when she performed she was captivating.
Matt Corby - He is the reason I want to write music. His songs are stunning and exciting, and paired with his insane vocals he is a force to be reckoned with. He gives me the courage to write the music that makes me happy.

Is there a certain film that inspires you?
I have so many films that I love but I suppose one that inspires me is Little Women. The story follows 4 young girls who each grow up and work out who they want to be in the world. It is a beautiful film and the main character Jo was my hero when I was younger.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
I haven't been to many places but I love Brighton in the UK. The vibrant, arty vibe is incredible and walking the Lanes with all the old vintage and antique shops is one of my favourite memories. It is such a diverse city and I honestly felt at home the first moment I arrived.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
Queen Elizabeth I. What a badass! She ruled England like a boss without a man at her side in a time where women were prefered to be seen and not heard. She was the original feminist.

What were your inspirations when writing the track?
I have two main inspirations for Crickets.
1. The guy that I had feelings for - to whom I sang this song to to let him know how I felt. (It worked!!!)
2. The crickets that I could hear chirping through my window as I sat at my piano writing. (Fun fact: The crickets that you can hear in the track towards the end were those actual crickets, who I recorded by sticking a mic out said window.)

How would you like to inspire people?
I would like to inspire young girls to stand up for themselves and not be afraid to hustle for their dreams. Growing up I felt that I shouldn't try to stand out and put myself forward for things. I got quite good at putting myself and my abilities down. I want to show them that you can do whatever you put your mind to.
