In Conversation With #096 - Video Age
New-Orleans based band Video Age blend a unique mix of incredible songwriting with eighties pop to create a new futuristic sound on new album ‘Pleasure Line’. We had a chat with the band about the release.
Hey there, so how are you? The album is out now, how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
We’re incredibly thankful to be releasing music during such a difficult time. Music has really helped brighten our days, hopefully we can share that feeling with others.
It is titled ‘Pleasure Line’ - does that hold a meaning for you?
Ross said the phrase “pleasure line” one day on the road, and we knew right away that it would be a catalyst for the new album. We think of it as a destination- a place where you can see yourself and others more clearly, where you can share deeper love.
Where was the album recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the recording process?
We recorded and mixed the whole album in Ross’s living room. We blocked out two separate weeks and recorded from 10:00 am until 8:00 pm. We had 6 keyboards, two drum machines, two guitars, one bass, and a lot of snacks.
While your first two albums dealt with more darker subjects like loneliness and discovering oneself, this album sees you take a more positive direction. What has caused this change?
We felt like we were entering a new phase in our lives, in our relationships, and as a band. We did a lot of touring, so that helped create distance and give us perspective on where we had been and where we wanted to be. Getting engaged was a big step forward as well.
What are the key themes and influences on this album?
Love, commitment, passion, companionship, perseverance. Prince, The B52’s, Sade, Parliament, Janet Jackson, Joni Mitchell.
Do you have a favorite lyric on the album? If so, which one?
“Call on me when you wanna be royalty, you are the ruler of my heart.” -Blushing
Now the album is out there - what next?
We hope everyone can enjoy the album while staying safe and healthy. We’ll see you soon!
