Let us introduce you to London born artist Yazmyn Hendrix, who uses loops and layers to produce some mystical r&b. She has just released her new single ‘Fate’ - she took a moment to talk to us about the track and her music.

Hey there Yazmyn - how are you?
Pretty good thanks considering the world seems to be low-key ending.. no, I joke! I am blessed to be living and breathing another day on this planet, still able to release music and connect with other humans.

So your track ‘Fate’ is out now, can you tell us what it is about?
‘Fate’ is really about that feeling that you have when you know something is ‘meant to be,’ and I guess it’s about going within and exploring that innate truth within you. In the song I sing in the context of a relationship, but when writing the song I wanted to find a way to portray that feeling when you “just know,” which I think can be applied to a lot of different situations.

The song is the first track to come from your debut EP ‘Chapters’. When can we get to hear that?
It is indeed! The release is scheduled for 6th November 2020. Exciting times!

You were born in London, what is your favorite thing about the city?
London’s diversity is by far my favourite thing about the city. I’ve travelled a little and lived outside of London for a couple of years, and what I missed most (other than my cool family) was the diversity. There are so many cultures, cuisines, traditions and lives to learn from here which inspires and excites me. I love meeting new people and learning new things.

Where do you go for musical kicks?
At the moment it’s a bit tough! But I loved popping into open mic nights and jam nights all over London before Covid. Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club was a favourite spot, as well as Troy Bar on a Friday. There are so many grassroots venues which are in jeopardy right now and I hope they get the support they need to stay open. The Jago, The Post, The Bedford, Strongrooms and eartH are all venues I used to frequent often.

What are your key musical influences?
I grew up listening to a lot of Ella Fitzgerald; so her voice holds this magical quality that sounds like perfection to me. I also like a lot of different genres of music - from classical to rock, and lo-fi hip hop to folk. I love Meshell Ndegeocello (a brilliant bassist/singer/songwriter/producer with over 10 albums), and at the moment I’m listening to a lot of UK Jazz.
