Introducing #106 - Flossy Jones
Let us introduce you to Brighton sing-songwriter Flossy Jones, who has just released her new single ‘Goodbye Kiss’ - a dream pop wonder about an old flame. She took a moment to talk to us about her music.
Hey Flossy Jones, how are you? Your new track ‘Goodbye Kiss’ is out now, can you tell me what this is about?
I’m very well, thank you! Goodbye Kiss is my goodbye, I never got the chance to say, to an old flame. When he was taken away he took my best days with him. I was so young back then and nothing really mattered, we were just happy. No money but content, drinking cheap wine and dancing. And I like to remember those nights often.
Where are you based? And what is your favourite thing about living there?
I’m a Brighton girl, I’ve always lived along the coast and couldn't live without the ocean. But i’d have to say my favourite thing about Brighton is the total lack of judgement, you're free to be yourself here and its given me the chance to develop who I really am.
Where do you go for musical adventures?
I’m quite a solitary person deep down and feel most inspired by the little things. So I have a place I always go that nobody knows is there, it’s shrouded by palm tree’s, right next to the sea and there’s no signal. The only thing you can hear are the waves and the birds, it isn't much of an adventure, but it’s where i’ll always go to feel at peace.
How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to your music before?
I’d say dramatic, like me. Emotional, also like me. It’s cinematic and I like to think of it as ‘old meets new.’ Elements of Jazz, grunge and pop.
What are your key musical influences?
I tend to write about different phases of my life instead of specific things and so my songs tend to be influenced by what music I was listening to at that time, like a soundtrack to my life throughout that phase. I have always found it hard to talk to people so writing has always been my way of conveying how I feel. So naturally i’m influenced a lot by clever lyricists which range all the way from Leonard Cohen to Kendrick Lamar.
