Upcoming British R&B artist James Vickery tickles our ears with the first taster from his debut album with new single ‘Somewhere, Out There’. He took a moment to talk to us in more depth about the release.

Hey there James, how are you? You track ‘Somewhere, Out There’ is out now, can you tell us what the track is about?
Hiii. It's a song about feeling completely alone throughout this last year. I'm hoping that some people will be able to relate as lockdown really was tough on a lot of people. I'm writing it for the people who are being kept apart from their significant others at this hard time.

Where was the track recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from this process?
I wrote it with the producer Maths Time Joy (Mahalia, Sinead Harnett, Gallant etc). I believe we wrote it in London just after I got back from travelling a lot. It was written super quickly, I was feeling real inspired at the time as there was so much going on at the time. Definitely was getting in my feels listening to Daniel Caesar a lot at the time, you can probably hear the inspiration in the song I'm sure!

It is the first taster from your debut album, how is that coming along? When can we get to hear it?
I'm dropping a few more singles before it comes out, then you'll have the full project! It's very very close, just a few more details and things to iron out here and there!

Will it differ from your ‘Overture’ EP?
It will differ in the fact that it's heaps and bounds the best piece of music I've ever created- I'm confident of that. Sonically I think Overture showed people the type of music I want to create, my debut album feels like a natural progression from what people heard in that project.

Have you faced any problems creating or recording music during UK covid lockdowns?
I think every musician has somewhat. I'm lucky in the sense I didn't have any problems with creativity in 2020 and had a good enough setup that I was able to record and do a lot from home. I started by making music in my bedroom so in some sense it was really nice to have finished parts of the album in that same space. Almost like a full circle effect, it was really nice.
