Inspired #313 - Hedda Mae
Bergen’s pop queen Hedda Mae has just released her second EP ‘The Early Struggles of a Late Millennial’ - an incredible collection of five total pop bangers influenced by 90s/00s pop and R&B. She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind her music and the EP.
Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
I think that would be Bruno Mars, Anderson. Paak and Britney Spears. Bruno and Paak were my main inspirations when I wrote my first EP, Introducing: Hedda Mae. They have a timing and playfulness that I really look up to, and they’re simply just great musicians. Britneys’ album Circus is one of the first albums I ever heard, and lately I’ve been super inspired by 00s and 90s music. I’m very fascinated by all the top-lines from then, and I think you’ll might hear some Britney (and Justin Timberlake) in my newest EP The Early Struggles of a Late Millennial.
Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
I’m honestly so bad at watching movies. However, I find 8 Mile really cool, and the music is so so good.
What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
My hometown, Bergen. It’s amazing in so many ways- the nature, the people, the musical culture. It’s where I grew up, and even though I just moved away, I can’t wait to go back again.
Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
If I were to pick just one, I think that would be Britney again. In my eyes she’s been such a hardworking woman that has been a role model and lead the way for the next generation of female pop-artists. She’s also been a huge inspiration for me as a performer. What an ICON.
What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
I mostly write about things that happen in my- or my friends’ daily life, and "Getting Along" is no exception. It’s basically a criticism of all superficial relationships, either it’s related to the music business, high school or group projects. This is actually the first song I wrote with Benjamin Giørtz, the producer I’ve written all the songs I’ve released with so far.
How would you like to inspire people?
My main goal is to make people feel something when listening to my music; nostalgia, the urge to dance, sassiness.. But I’d also like to inspire people to be themselves. There’s a lot of personality and quirkiness in my songs, and I hope to show the world that everything doesn’t necessarily have to be so serious all the time.
