Inspired #319 - Amber Jay
Liverpool based genre bending alt-pop artist Amber Jay is back with her latest invitation into her cinematic universe with new single ‘Equal’. A track that challenges that inferior feeling society's version of normal creates. She took a moment to talk to us about the inspirations behind the new single and her music.
Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
Ahh it’s constantly changing so I’ll give you my top three as Amber circa October 13th 2021 at 9:42am.
Orla Gartland - I went to see her the other day and her voice live was so strong and beautiful. I hate it when you can’t differentiate between songs but with hers there’s something in each one that is individually interesting. I believe she also producers her tracks which is something I want to get more involved with doing myself. She’s also independent which is hugely inspiring.
Me & Deboe - my fellow Liverpool/Yorkshire legends. Honestly they’re incredible across the board, lyrics, melody, the guitar rhythms, I could go on forever. There’s something wrong with ya if they get up and start playing and your neck doesn’t almost break because you turned so fast to start watching them.
- coming up doing alt pop music you can’t not be inspired by billie. She’s non conforming, outspoken, it’s everything about her.
Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
I’m gonna say any Marvel film with a female lead. Just makes me want to get super ripped and then backflip off skyscraper and land on a moving vehicle. Anything’s possible.
What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
I’d say London makes me feel like I can do whatever I want. It always opens up my mind and in a weird way chills me out because everyone seems to just do their own thing. I’m also a sucker for anything American. I love the aesthetic of the culture. The sports teams, the fast food, I just love the novelty of it all.
Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
I would say just in general other artists inspire me, I don’t think there’s one particular person. Whenever I see someone else killing it either on a track or on stage I just think it’s the coolest thing and reminds me of the magic of it all.
What were your inspirations when writing your new track?
I was watching ‘Knock Down the House’ on Netflix and afterwards I just felt really frustrated but empowered to write something. So I took myself upstairs, wrote the chorus and then pieced together the verses and bridge. I drew from personal experiences of feeling inferior because of my gender but also just my perspectives on other people’s behaviours. Like when people seem to think they can deny how someone feels and that their experience is invalid which is just ridiculous. How can you discard someone’s human experience just because you think it’s wrong. You can’t feel what another person feels.
How would you like to inspire people?
Ooo I hope all people can relate to this song and feel some sort of unity whoever you are. There’s a lot of minorities out there and so when we all come together with a shared experience suddenly it’s quite a powerful thing.
