In Conversation With #165 - Abby Sage

Canadian artist Abby Sage has just released her new EP ‘Fears Of Yours & Mine’ - which is an emotional journey inspired by the trajectory of a relationship from start to finish.

Growing up watching her dad perform at various clubs around Toronto, Abby Sage was enchanted by the magic of the stage and crowd and felt the pull towards creating something her own. She began writing and recording tracks with her musician dad, and by the start of high school, she was beginning to post her music to Soundcloud in secret —that is until she accidentally released a track publicly. The next morning, her phone was flooded with messages.

She took a moment to talk to us about how the EP came together.

Hey there Abby, how are you? So your EP is out now - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
It feels good! Been holding on to these for about a year. Definitely feels good to hand it off & I hope it’s finding little homes all around :)

It is titled ‘Fears Of Yours & Mine’ - does that have a certain meaning behind it?
Yes! The whole project follows the trajectory of a relationship and its ultimate downfall. A lot of this is connected to fear. Everyone has their fears, I want this project to give a feeling of losing control of them.

Where was it recorded? Any behind-the-scenes stories from the creative process you are happy to share with us?
I recorded in Toronto with one of my best friends, Jeff Hazin. Definitely a lot behind the scenes. In the song “Space for Me” you can hear a nasally tone to my voice. This day was the last I had in Toronto & had worked through so much, I felt super emotional and couldn’t stop crying that whole session. We managed to use that state of vulnerability to our advantage and recorded the vocals literally mid sob fest. So yeah look out for a breakdown at the end of the project lol

What are the key themes and influences on the EP?
Definitely fear, reservations, & self preservation. “Residing in the Sky” is an awakening while many of the others build up to that. I hope people can find something in that.

Do you have a favorite lyric on the EP? If so, which one and why?
“I’m making love to my future” is one of my favorites on “Residing In The Sly”. I would say “you take the high road and I’ll take a smoke break” is another favorite. I just really like the contrast in mindset in that one.

Now the EP is out there - what next for you?
I’ll be in London for the next month or so! Just creating outside of my day to day routine is one of my favorite things. I have family out there too I’ve been meaning to reconnect with for a while. I’m also diving into the digital art space which is something I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve been working at it everyday so I am excited to share that too!
