Inspired #345 - Basement Revolver

Last month, Canadian indie band Basement Revolver released their gnarly shoegaze single ‘Tunnel Vision’. Pairing, heavy, raw walls of pummelling instrumentation with washed out, intimate vocals, the song reflects on guitarist/vocalist Chrisy Hurn’s battle with bulimia and body dissatisfaction. Chrisy took a moment to talk to us about some of her current inspirations.

Who are your top three musical inspirations and why?
My top three musical inspirations would have to be Mewithoutyou, Mewithoutyou, and Mewithoutyou.

Is there a certain film that inspires you and why?
I saw Scream for the first time ever in 35mm a few weeks ago - and I admit - I may have been a tiny bit stoned, but it was just so so so good.

What city do you find the most inspiring and why?
Hamilton, where I live. I love this city, but it is starting to get too expensive.

Who is the most inspiring person to you and why?
Can I say all of my friends? Just really great people, who despite the craziest two years of our lives, are still doing their best to push through. Honestly, COVID aside, the past two years have been horribly traumatic for all of us, and still, everyone puts in the effort to heal and show up for life, day after day, even if showing up means taking a personal day for your mental health.

What were your inspirations when writing ‘Tunnel Vision’?
‘Tunnel Vision’ was probably inspired by the Drop Nineteens, I was having a big Delaware phase when I wrote ‘Tunnel Vision’ and to be honest am still hanging on to that phase. Such a good album - I’m sad I only came to it a few years ago.

How would you like to inspire people?
With ‘Tunnel Vision’ and with the rest of the upcoming album, the songs are really just a time capsule of me working through my ED and other mental health things. I hope that my journey can inspire other people to work towards mental wellness.
