Let us introduce you to Leeds dream-pop four piece Bad Idea - who have just released their new single ‘Winter’ via Rose Colored Records. They took a moment to talk to us about their music.

Hey there Bad Idea, how are you? So your new single ‘Winter’ is out now - can you tell us what it is all about?
Hey! I guess we’re doing as well as can be! Winter is a happy sounding song about sad things. I wrote the lyrics to the track back in the winter of 2019 before the pandemic, where I was doing a lot of drinking and having fun but also burning through money. The songs about being stuck in a rut in your job and financially but that’s because you’re enjoying your life, happy and sad!

You come from the city of Leeds - what are your favorite things about it? Where do you go for musical adventures?
Leeds is honestly great - the music scene here is great for DIY bands and have some of the best venues - Brudenell Social Club and Wharf Chambers to name a couple. If you also like beer like us, it’s the place to be - and you’re more than likely to come across some live music wherever you go for a drink, no matter what genre.

How did the band begin?
The band started back in 2017 with myself and the drummer Daniel, who is also my partner. The name Bad Idea coming from the fact we started the band simultaneously with our relationship. We’d both been hanging around the York music scene for a couple of years and went to a rock show in Leeds and the whole thing came together drunk dancing in a bar to Madonna’s ‘Like a Prayer’. We played as a two piece for a couple of years but we wanted bigger and better, so we were joined by Charlie and Liam on bass and guitar in 2019.

What are your key musical influences as a band?
Collectively, we love a bit of Snail Mail, Cocteau Twins, Fresh and Pity Sex
But individually? You’d probably end up with a strange Venn diagram between System of a Down and Britney.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to you before?
This is a hard question because we’re a mixed bag of genres so we’re all gonna take a guess!
Liam - We sound like if Soccer Mommy tried to break into Arctangent festival and played a set.
Sarah - We sound like if Cocteau Twins had a punk phase and let you in on their secret whispers.
Charlie - We are like a less cool My Bloody Valentine.
Daniel - We sound like rejects from a mid-2000's teen movie soundtrack.

Now this single is out in the world - what next for you?
More music! We’ve got our follow up single, Happy, coming out on the 19th on Rose Coloured Records. (And hopefully gigs, we pray for gigs and the future of live music).
