Inspired #130 - Red Ribbon
LA-based musician Red Ribbon talks us through the inspirations of her new track ‘Renegade’ - taken from her newly announced album ‘Planet X’ (Due out 11th June).
Who are your top three musical inspirations?
I am going to cheat and tell you four! Shahzad Ismaily, Monika Khot, Veronica Dye, Abbey Blackwell. They are the musicians on Planet X. Sometimes it's hard to talk to somebody but then if you both pick up an instrument and communicate with that instead of languages it is insane and you can have a really amazing conversation.
Is there a certain film that inspires you?
The first films that ever really inspired me were Godard films with Anna Karina. I found them when I was maybe 14 or something and became obsessed with her in the way that only a teenage girl can obsess over somebody.
What city do you find the most inspiring?
I gotta say Los Angeles at the moment because I just moved here. I want to acknowledge the Gabrielino/Tongva peoples as the traditional land caretakers of Tovaangar, also known as the Los Angeles Basin area. I'm just passing through I guess but I am so grateful to be here.
Who is the most inspiring person to you?
Elliott Smith is definitely an important musical inspiration to me. He wrote so many perfect songs. Roman Candle is my favorite record of his. No Name #3 is a perfect song that lowers my blood pressure in traffic.
What were your inspirations when writing your new single?
I was thinking about running to escape personal demons only to realize you carry them with you. You know? You can run far away but you can't outrun the things inside you.
How would you like to inspire people?
It would be a dream come true to inspire anyone at all to pick up an instrument. People kept telling me I was playing guitar wrong early on, but the jokes on them because there is no wrong way to play!
