Let us introduce you to GhostStory. the new solo project from Manchester’s Spencer Mason, who took the time to explain his music, and what makes him tick.

Hey guys, thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. How would you describe your sound to someone who has never listened to you before?

Can I say schizoaffective? I’d say alternative free-form I guess

You’ve just released your most recent single SPARTAN. Can you tell us a bit about it?

Largely it’s in the lyric. Sonically it’s a representation of mania and a chance for to experiment with sculpting new sounds. It was intended as the successor, or a sort of part 2, to Prometheus. I struggle to think about a work once it’s done, I can only really focus on the next thing I want to write.

Having fronted bands and now struck out as solo, which do you prefer and why?

I prefer the creative process and rehearsal structuring to solo – it’s a lot easier to get just me in a room than it can be four musicians. I’ve never been as confident solo though and I’m half excited half nervous to see how that energy plays out once gigs open up again.

Where are you from? Where do you like to go for adventures?

I’m from a wee town on the East Coast of Scotland, just outside Fundee. I like hiking round lochs and forests when I’m back north, the nature does a lot for me. I feel choked when I’ve not heard the sound of open water for a while. Obviously, that’s a massive privilege to be used to though.

What are your key musical influences?

Kae Tempest, Enter Shikari and The Prodigy are all huge influences and artist’s I’ve tried to glean something from, in my own stumbling way. It changes on the daily, I get overstimulated easily which can make it really a natural to connect with tracks.

Finally, what can we expect from you as the year progresses?

A lot. Drum and Bass. Hardcore. Poetry. Hip-Hop. EDM. Electronic Rock. Folk. Some more remixes. I work between a lot at once so this is just the start of a plethora of upcoming plans. I’m finally trying to getting on top of it all personally, and that’s where I’m aiming to be creatively.
