Artist Of The Week #164 - girlhouse
This week’s Artist of the Week is US based bedroom pop pop-star girlhouse - who has just released her debut EP ‘the girlhouse EP’. A perfect introduction with her euphoric sound, while ticking the boxes for fans of Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Snail Mail. She took a moment to talk to us about how the EP came together.
Hey there girlhouse, how are you? So your debut EP is out now - how does it feel to have it out there in the world?
Hi! I'm very good, thank you! I'm pretty freaking excited about this release. I'm curious to see if people listen to it! I love how the story of this EP shaped out, it became a lot more cohesive than I originally planned.
Where was it recorded? Any behind the scenes stories from the creative process?
Most of these songs were written and recorded in Highland Park, CA. Tyler and I had a cool little bungalow right off of figueroa. Such a great area! I'm still looking for a food papusa spot now that I live in Nashville.
What are the key themes and influences on the EP?
Depression and anxiety wrapped up under an LA blanket. I was trying to decide if I needed to move from LA and start a new chapter in my life. I kind of felt like I got everything I needed out of LA, it was time to go somewhere else and learn something new. I made a trip up to Oregon during the summer to be with my family during some tricky times and I realized how important being in a place with rain and greenery. As much as I love LA, I felt like it was time to move on for my health.
Do you have a favorite lyric on the EP? If so, which one and why?
"We're all gonna die, funny isn't it?" It just feels like something I would say that I would feel anxious about after.
Alongside the EP, you have released your new single ‘pretty girl in la’ - can you tell us what that track is about?
This one is about some stupid shit someone in la said to me when I was just out and about minding my own business. Someone told me one time that I was "pretty but not la pretty" and I obsessed about that comment for a solid year. I still don't know what they meant by that but I knew it wasn't good?
You have toured quite extensively over the past few years, what have been your fondest memories of those experiences?
I have so many great memories about being on the road. I really miss playing mario party and listening to music with the guys. I love the shows and getting to play music for people but the time spent with your buddies is the best possible time.
You once performed at the White House for President Barack Obama - can you tell us a bit more about that?
I was in the revival of a musical called Spring Awakening on Broadway a few years ago during the Obama administration. Our show was pretty interesting because we kept the same script and songs but half the cast was deaf and the entire show was in sign language. It was an INCREDIBLE adaptation of that story. Michelle Obama has just passed the American's With Disability act and it was a celebration of that. The absolute coolest day.
Now the EP is out there, what next for you?
I have a ton more music ready to go so i'm excited to get this out so we can start getting ready for the next chapter of girlhouse! Also, can't wait to hit the road again!
